If you love a child………

Why are our children getting sicker?

The facts that I am going to share with you about the rising rate of chronic illness in our children is not only startling, but appalling. How is it that we live in a country with the most advanced medical technology in the world, yet our children are getting sicker?

So one has to wonder if this childhood epidemic of chronic illness is related to some sort of genetic abnormality ? an aggressive virus or bacterial infection?  While these are all factors that may impact our children’s health, they are not the primary cause. There is no medical mystery here. The simple fact is that our children’s health is being impacted by the foods they eat and the toxic environment they live in. Let me share a few of the facts with you. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

  • Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the last 30 years
  • One out of every 400 children & adolescence have diabetes.  Even more alarming is the dramatic increase in type 2 diabetes in children
  • 9.1% of children have asthma & many more with allergies
  • 17 million diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD)
  • (CDC) has announced that 1 in 88 children in the U.S. are now diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder
  • Vaccines: impact natural immunity, linked to increases in autism, ADD, allergies, etc. The US has twice as many vaccines as Sweden and Japan, and twice as high an infant mortality rate
  • #2 killer of children ages 5-14 is Cancer
  • Sean Palfrey, MD-professor of Clinical Pediatrics & Public Health at Boston University: “80,000 chemicals produced in the United States…We can eat them or drink, breathe them and absorb them through the skin. They harm the blood cells related to Leukemia or brain cells and show up years later.”
  • Childhood Leukemia has sky-rocketed

Please do not misunderstand my intentions. I am not blaming you as I have been in your shoes. Even many health care providers continue to minimize the impact of what I am about to share with you. I am merely trying to increase your awareness, so you can gain a better understanding of how our diet and environment are hurting our children.

My children

I am blessed with four amazing children, ages 9 – 22 years (see them in the photo above – Disney 2010). When my own awareness was increased by the information I am sharing with you I immediately went to my older three children and apologized for all of the crappy food that I exposed them to in their younger years…. then thought that maybe there is still hope for my nine year old.  As a young mother, I really did not fully understand the impact that processed and fast foods could potentially have on my children’s health. Now that my awareness has been raised by this startling data, my mission is to share this information with everyone that has a child in their lives. I am not suggesting that everything will change overnight but together we can make a difference.

Help us spread the word

I have partnered with my friend and colleague Todd Burrier and the Million Lives Team, a group of dedicated people who are committed to making a million lives better. Our team includes many amazing people, who I will introduce to you along this journey. We challenge you to share our vision, read every single blog, every single facebook post and to share this information with every person you know that has a child in their lives, every friend on your facebook page and every contact on your email list.  Our children need our help…..

Great Info Dr. Laura!  The timing for this blog could not be more appropriate.  Speaking as a mother, we all have so much to learn about this subject and our children’s health should be our main priority.  Looking forward to reading the rest of your blog series on this subject.

Thank you Linda for your comment and your willingness to help increase everyone’s awareness on this issue.  For me, reading the statistics was a real eye opener – I believe that every parent needs to see it.
